Why do I need Document Protection?
There are many different types of confidential documents. For example there are training material or technical documentation that should only be read by a participant of the training or an authorized partner. And information about weak points (those of a car, for instance) should be available for the responsible dealers’ garage but not be published worldwide via the press.
Not only confidential documents but also the sales of information, for example an electronic book, an electronic newspaper or an electronic article, are classical cases for document protection. Here the inhibition threshold to pass such a content is even less than it would be the case for purchased software.
For keeping confidential documents secret and to prevent the illegal grapevine of purchased content it is helpful to use Document Protection. The challenge of Document Protection is the big variety of available document types such as PDF, HTML, DOC, or XLS. Some of them already offer their own protection solution. But in most cases it can be cracked within short time via tools of the Internet.

After the installation of the SmartShelter plug-in a new menu Save SmartShelter Encrypted PDF Document appears in Adobe Acrobat, to define the encryption parameters of the document. The parameters are used for generating a unique access code 32 characters in length, based on the Document ID. After that, the document can be accessed only with the suitable CodeMeter stick or WibuBox, programmed for document protection.
Individual PDF Rights
In addition individual rights may be assigned to modify or print the document. Finally an owner pass code will be generated, which prevents other readers from erasing a document’s pass code after opening.

Batch Processing Capability
SmartShelter | PDF integrates batch processing capability for Adobe Acrobat. For that purpose a new command Encrypt Multiple Files is available. This command, used in batch processing, permits the presetting of all CodeMeter parameters to produce the encrypted documents. Therefore it is possible to encrypt all PDF documents in a directory or to automatically convert and encrypt Microsoft Word documents in a single step.
The Adobe Acrobat Reader opens the PDF document as usual. After detecting a CodeMeter stick with the suitable license code entry, the document will be opened. If the correct CodeMeter stick is missing, the password dialog pops up and requests that a password be entered manually.

SmartShelter | PDF protected documents can be displayed on Windows and Mac operating systems.
How does SmartShelter | Classic work?
SmartShelter puts all documents in an archive. You as the publisher can determine different authorization levels, such as “public” or “customers”.
Now you refer the corresponding authorization level to the different documents. Then the SmartShelter Archive Compiler creates the corresponding archive. If there are documents connected via hyperlinks, they will be automatically transferred in the archive and the right authorization level will be referred automatically.
Now you just program a CodeMeter stick or a WibuBox with the corresponding authorization level and attach it to your archive. A CodeMeter stick or a WibuBox can include several authorization levels. For example, your staff can read the documents of the service staff if you want to allow it.
The public area is available for everybody even without CodeMeter stick or WibuBox. It might contain taster information that should attract the customers to purchase the complete archive.
SmartShelter is helpful for all documents you want to publish and that will not be changed. Only you as the publisher can put documents into the archive.
